Andrea Mantegna, St. Sebastian (c. 1456 - 1459), tempera on panel, 30 x 68 cm. Collection of Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. Via Wikimedia Commons.
The twice-martyred St. Sebastian is depicted in our new manuscripts exhibition Miracles and Martyrs as calmly accepting his fate (even while punctured by 8 arrows). Compared to Mantegna’s famed rendition, which emanates human pain and suffering, this medieval Sebastian seems totally unfazed.
